Slovenian Grandmaster (1975) born in Ukraine and citizen of Slovenia since 1995. Slovenian Champion in 1995 and in 2011. World Junior Championship in 1973. USSR Champion in 1974, 1980, 1987 and 1990. FIDE Senior Trainer (2004) of some top players including Maxime Vachier Lagrave.
Best results: Winner or shared first at Alicante 1978, Bucharest and Tashkent 1980, Tilburg 1981, Sarajevo 1982, Minsk 1983, Wijk aan Zee 1984. In 1986 he won in Tilburg 1986, Sochi 1986, Amsterdam 1989, Munich 1990, Belgrade 1993, Leon 1994, 1995 Bern, Polanica Zdroj 1996, Frankfurt open 1997, Vidmar Memorial 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2011, Pula Zonal 2000 and the Ljubljana chess club anniversary in 2002, Simon Bolivar Open 2012, European Individual Championship (1-4) 2013, HIT Open SLO 2015.
Even though Beliavsky had lost the 1982 Quarter Final Match of the Candidates Tournament for the World Championship to the latest champion Garry Kasparov (+1, -4, =4), he was considered to be one of the strongest players in the world.
The author of few book with Adrian Mikhalchishin: Winning Endgame Technique 1995, Fianchetto Grunfeld (1998), Uncompromising Chess (1998), The Two Knights Defence (1999), Winning Endgame Strategy (2000), Modern Endgame Practice (2003).
