Barcza Gedeon (21.08.1911 – 27.02.1986)

Barcza-GedeonHungarian Grandmaster (1954), as well as International Correspondence Master (1966).  Author, he wrote several books on Hungarian chess and general chess history.
Eight-times National Champion between 1942 and 1966, also the Editor of Magyar Sakkelet between 1951 and 1986.

Won or shared first at Gyor in 1946, San Benedetto del Tronto in 1957 and finished second at Karlovy Vary and Venice in 1948.

A participant in seven Olympiads. In one of them (Moscow 1956) his win against Vassily Smyslov brought the unprecedented loss by the Soviet side of an Olympiad match.

He was called Dr. Fu Manchu by Bobby Fischer because of his appearance.

Barcza is remembered for the opening 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3, known as the Barcza System.
