Balinas Rosendo Carreon Jr. (10.09.1941 – 24.09.1998)
Filipino Grandmaster (1976). Lawyer, writer, and journalist. Best Asian player of the 1960s. Seven-time the Champion of Philippines. At the 1966 Olympiad, he was awarded a silver medal for the second best score on board 3 (behind Tal) with 15½ points out of 20.
Best results: Melbourne 1975, zonal-3-4th, Manila 1975- 6-7th, Odessa 1976-1st, the first foreign victory in the USSR since Capablanca’s in 1936, Dortmund 1976-4th, Manchester 1979 –3-5th, Dubai 1984-4-6th.
A participant in the Olympiads from 1966 until 1976. He holds the distinction of being the first non-Soviet to win a tournament in the then Soviet Union. He died of liver cancer in the Philippines in 1998.
