German Correspondence Grandmaster (1973) and FIDE Master (OTB). He was a chemist at the research centre for molecular biology of the Science Academy of Berlin.
World Correspondence Champion (1983-1988) and Vice World Champion (1977-1983), Gold Medal (board 4) in the XI Olympiad in 1992-1999.
Also finished second in the Lenin Memorial CC Tournament in 1970-1973.
Over the board, he was the East German Champion in 1970 and played in the chess Olympiad in 1970.
President of the German Correspondence Association and ICCF General Secretary between 1993 and 1999.
Best ELO: 2395 in 1977. He published Tips und Tricks won Weiltmaster in 1991, Die Schachuhr lüft, Ihr Zug bitte in 1993 and Gladiatoren ante Portas: Massow-Memorial (with Volker-Michael Antonin)in 2003.
