Atkins Henry Ernest (20.08.1872 – 31.01.1955)
English International Master (1950) who won the British Championship 9 times in 11 appearances and 7 times in a row (1905-1911, 1924 and 1925). Only Penrose has won it more times than this (10 times). He was known as ‘the little Steinitz’. Emmanuel Lasker wrote that Atkins had the potential to become a grandmaster, and maybe a World Champion. Atkins was almost always out of practice. Won Clifton 1896, Southampton 1897, Amsterdam 1899, London 1907, Tunbridge 1908, Oxford 1910, Glasgow 1911, Southport 1924, Strafor. Played the Olympiads in 1927 and 1935.
