Olafsson Fridrick (26.01.1935)

Olafsson smlIcelandic Grandmaster (1958), the fourth President of FIDE 1978-82. Lawyer. Champion of Iceland in 1952-53, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1964 and 1969, winner of the North Countries Championships in 1953 and 1971.

Best results: In 1955 came in equal first at Hastings 1956, 1-2nd; Reykjavik in 1956, 1-st; Beverwijk 1959, 1st; Bergendal 1960, 1st; Los Angeles 1963, 3-4th. Reykjavik 1966, 1972 and 1976, 1st and Wijk aan Zee 1976, 1-st.

In matches,  he beat twice Herman Pilnik in 1955 (+4=2-0) and in 1957 (+4=1-3) and in 1956 lost to Bent Larsen 4½-3 ½.

A participant in the Olympiads between 1952 and 1980, he won two individual medals: gold (1962) and bronze (1956) all with a score of 14 points out of a possible 18.

In 1982, for more than 20 years, he was appointed Secretary of the Parliament of Iceland.
