Nunn-John-Denis-Martin-Dr.English Grandmaster (1978) and Solving Grandmaster. Ph.D in Mathematics (at 20). Author and publisher. World Champion in Chess Solving 2004, 2007 and 2010. European Junior Champion in 1975. British Champion in 1980.

Best results: won or shared first at Amsterdam B 1975, Budapest 1978, Hastings 1979-80, Manchester 1980, Helsinki and Wiesbaden 1981, Wijk aan Zee 1982 and 1990, Marbella and Biel 1982, Biel, Gjovik, London and Brighton 1983, London, Zurich and Hamburg 1984, Krefeld 1986, Geneva 1987. Equal third at Brussels-Ohra 1986 and Brussels-SWIFT 1988. In a match he lost to Lajos Portisch in 1987 (+0-2=4).

A participant in the Olympiads from 1976 until 1994 where he collected two gold, four silver and one bronze medal for outstanding performances individually and with his team.

He was voted BCF’s Player of the Year in 1985. Having retired from international chess (OTB), he is the director of chess publishers Gambit Publications and an active participant in solving tournaments where he has collected several titles.
