Mestel Andrew Jonathan (13.03.1957)
English International Grandmaster (1982). Professor of applied mathematics at Imperial College London. World U14 Champion in 1974. British Champion in 1976, 1983 and 1988. Bronze medalist at the World U20 in 1975.
Best results: Birmingham 1976, 1st; London 1976, 1st-5th; 1977, 2nd-4th; 1985, 2nd-5th; Bern 1977, 2nd-6th; Esbjerg 1979, 1st-2nd; 1980, 2nd; 1984, 2nd-3rd.
A member of the English team between 1978 and 1988, he won three team medals (two silver and one bronze). In 1984, he earned an individual gold medal for the best performance on board five.
Mestel is also an outstanding solver of chess problems with the title of Solving Grandmaster. He has won the World Chess Solving Championship in 1997. Several times the British Solving Champion, he has represented his country very successfully in many occasions at the World Team Solving Championships winning two world titles.
