Matanovic Aleksandar (23.05.1930)

Matanovic smlSerbian Grandmaster (1955), author, editor, and journalist. In 1990, he was elected for four years as Vice President of FIDE.

Matanovic to play actively chess after the war. He earned the title of National Master in 1949 and has been awarded IM in 1951 and finally IGM in 1955. He won three titles of National Champion in 1962, 1969 and 1978.

Best results:  winner at Opatija 1953. Hamburg 1955, Beverwijk 1957, Buenos Aires and Zevenaar 1961, Bordeaux 1964, Titovo Uzice 1966, Bad Pyrmont 1970, Luxembourg 1971, Belgrade 1977 and London 1983.

Matanovic has participated in six Zonals and four Interzonals but never qualified for the Candidate Tournament.
He was a member of the Yugoslav national team from 1950 till 1980 and collected nine Olympic medals and five European medals. Matanovic was a chess journalist known as the chief editor of the famous Chess Informant which was founded in 1966. Later he published also several theoretical encyclopedias on openings, middlegames and endgames.
