German International Grandmaster (1975). East German Champion in 1957 and 1973. East German youth champion in 1953. Second best East German player after Wolfgang Uhlmann. second in 1962, 1963, 1971, 1972, 1974.

Best results Zinnowitz 1969, 1971, 1^st; Debrecen 1969, 2^nd-3^rd; Amsterdam II 1971, 1^st-2^nd; Decin 1976, 1^st and Leipzig 1977, 1^st-3^rd.

Working at the University of Halle, he left active chess at the end of the 1970s. However, retired since 2001, he is now playing regularly in senior events and was a member of the national senior team who won the World Senior Championship in 2004 and the European Senior Championship in 2005.
A participant in the Olympiads of 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966 and 1968.
