Lputian-Smbat-GariginovichArmenian Grandmaster (1984), Honoured Master of Sport of the Republic of Armenia who played in five USSR Championships between 1982 and 1987, scoring 41-46.

Best results: winner or shared first at Berlin 1982, Athens (equal), 1983, Irkutsk 1983, Tashkent 1984, Sarajevo 1985, Irkutsk 1986, Hastings 1986-87 (equal), Dortmund 1988, Altensteig 1989,  Dortmund Open 1992, Prodvino zonal 1993, Yerevan 1996, and Nereto Open 1999, and came in second at the very strong tournaments at Yerevan 1989, Dubai Open 2000, Aosta 2001, Poikovsky-Karpov 2001 and Isle of Man 2003.

A participant in all Olympiads between 1992 and 2004, he was awarded twice a silver medal for the best individual result at the boards 3 and 2 in 1992 and 1998 and bronze medals for the team result. A participant at 2000, 2001 and 2004 World Championships.

At present, Lputian is running the Yerevan Chess Academy and he is the Chairman of the Education Commission in FIDE since 2018.

Peak rating: 2638 in 2003. Retired from international chess since 2009
