Denker Arnold Sheldon (21.02.1914 – 02.02.2005)
U.S. Grandmaster (Emeritus-1981) and author. U.S. Champion in 1944.
Denker served as President of the North American Zone of FIDE and FIDE Delegate. He was on the Board of the American Chess Foundation, the United States Chess Federation, and the US Chess Trust.
Best results: N.Y. State Championship 1938, 1st; N. Y. State Championship 1941, 2nd; Manhattan Chess Club 1944, 1st; Groningen 1946, 3rd; US Open 1977, 2nd. In 1946 he defeated H. Steiner 6-4 (=3, -1, =6). .
In 1945 Denker participated at the radio match versus the USSR team. He lost to Botvinnik at the first board with the score of 0:2.
Author of My Best Game 1929-1976 (1981).
Inducted into the US. Chess Hall of Fame in 1992 he was also awarded the title of Dean of American Chess in 2004. He died from brain cancer in 2005.
