Averbakh Yuri Lvovich (08.02.1922)

Averbakh-Yuri-LvovichRussian Grandmaster (1952), International Arbiter (1969) and International Judge of Chess Composition (1956), Honoured Master of Sport of USSR 1965. An engineer by profession. Averback participated 15 times in the USSR championship with a victory in 1952. He was Moscow Champion in 1949, 1950 and 1962 (both joint).

Winner at Jakarta in 1956, 1960 and 1975, Adelaide 1960, Vienna 1961, Moscow 1962, Bucharest 1971, Polanica Zdroj 1975.

A member of the FIDE Executive Board (1978-82) and Central Committee of FIDE (1974-82). Chairman of the Qualification Committee (1978-86). Chairman of the USSR Chess Federation (1972-77).

Chief editor of the bulletin “Shakhmatnaya Moskva” (1958-62), chess magazine “Shakhmaty v SSSR” and“Shakhmatny bulletin”.

Chess historian and writer, author of many studies in the endgame with 5 volumes published in many languages.
