Soviet International Master (IM) of chess (1950), International Master at correspondence in 1966, chess coach and trainer, and a chess author. He was awarded an Honorary Grandmaster title in 1983. He was trained the world title challenger David Bronstein from a young age.

Best results: Five-time Kiev champion 1932-1936; Ukrainian SSR championships (1931, 1933, 1937, 1938, 1939), 3rd; Soviet championship 1945, 1st-3rd; 1st Soviet Correspondence Chess Championship 1948-1951, 1st;
