CHATRANG

Chess in old Persian. A word and a game derived from chaturanga which was changed by the Islamists to shatranj during the 7th century. The names of the pieces can be found in a Persian romance written in the early seventh century: Shah (modern King), Farzin (Queen), Pil (Bishop), Asp (Knight), Rukh (Rook), Piyadah (Pawn).
