CANNES
The famous film festival city of South of France on the border of the Mediterranean sea. The local chess club has organized chess festivals nearly twice a year since 1985: the Festival des Jeux in February and the Martinez Cup in August. The peak was in 2001 with the Rapid World Cup won by Garry Kasparov.
During the festival special events are often arranged like in 1988 a simultaneous exhibition with Kasparov (lost to Michael Adams, drew to Mikhail Ulibin and won the rest), a Scheveningen tournament won by Ulf Andersson in 1989, a match France-Rest of the World in 1992. In 1993, the matches Joel Lautier-Vladimir Kramnik 1½-4½, Oganes Danielan-Eloi Relange 3½-2½. In 1996, a Scheveningen tournament where Viktor Korchnoi scored 9½/10. In 1997 a similar tournament between old and young players won by a team composed of Boris Spassky, Borislav Ivkov, Mark Taimanov and Svetozar Gligoric. In 1999 two matches: Vlad Tkachiev vs. Aldo David 6-2 and Vlad Tkachiev vs. John Van der Wiel 7-3. Also, two matches in 2000 where Vlad Tkachiev drew with Jeroen Piket 4-4 and in the second Etienne Bacrot drew in Rapid with Karpov 1-1. In 2002 a women tournament was won by Zhao Xue. In 2003 a blind simul was given by Vlad Tkachiev who won 11 games and made one drew. In 2007 Cannes hosted the Mediterranean Championship. In 2011 Anatoly Vaisser drew a rapid and blitz match with Viktor Korchnoi
