BIRTHS

Vladimir Makogonov (1904-02.01.1993), strong Soviet Honorary Grandmaster and coach of Smyslov, Botvinnik, and Kasparov. “He was a master, and I thank the destiny, that I had the opportunity to communicate with him”, said Kasparov.
Eugene Znosko-Borovsky (1884-31.12.1954), Russian-French Master, coach and author. Editor of chess columns of numerous Russian newspapers. In 1917 he left for France and lived there for the rest of his life. Alekhine called him “one of the greatest modern chess creator-thinkers”.
Elizbar Ubilava (1950), Spanish Grandmaster born in Georgia. Twice he won the Georgian champion and was a second of Anand for 9 years.
Olivier Touzane (1973), French International Grandmaster  who got to beat Anand in a game in the 2001 FIDE knockout.
Vladimir Georgiev (1975), Bulgarian-Macedonian Grandmaster. He became Bulgarian Champion in 1995 and Macedonia Champion in 2007.
Konstantin Maslak (1984), Russian Grandmaster who switched successfully to poker game.
Aleksei Pridorozhni (1981), Russian Grandmaster.
R. Rajpara Ankit, (1994), Indian Grandmaster.

DEATHS

Victor Wahltuch (1875-1953), English Master who participated in the 1931 Olympiad as a member of the English team.
Georgy Agzamov (06.09.1954-1986), Soviet Grandmaster. the first of Central Asia who was accidentally killed when he went hiking and fell off a cliff and became trapped between two rocks. Taimanov said that “he was extraordinary sustained chess player with a brilliant tactical sight…”
