Olga Rubtsova Soviet (1909-13.12.1994) Soviet Women Grandmaster who remains the only player, male or female, to become World Champion in both over-the-board and correspondence chess.
Felix Schmidt (07.08.1916-11.08. 1984), Estonian chess International Master, chess writer, and chemist who emigrated to the USA.

DEATHS

Thomas Wilson Barnes (1825–1874), British Master, one of the leading British masters at the time of Morphy’ s supremacy.
Rudolph Spielmann, (1883-1942), a Viennese professional chess player who has participated in more than 100 tournaments died in Sweden.

CHESS EVENTS

1873 W. Steinitz won the strong tournament of Vienna.
1920 Cuba. Following a letter published by E. Lasker where he stated: “I shall no more be the champion”, JR. Capablanca published a statement regarding the future of the world chess championship. He signed the letter: J.R. Capablanca, Chess Champion of the World.
1957 The FIDE GA approved the Staunton design to be used for the chess pieces.
