The strongest German player and lawyer of the late 19th century and Grandmaster strength. German Champion in 1893 and 1904 (joint).
Best results: winner at London in 1883 and at Coburg in 1904.
In matches, he drew with Joseph Henry Blackburne (1895), lost 1½-2½ to Emanuel Lasker (1889), beat then lost to Richard Teichmann (1895 and 1910). He committed suicide by jumping out of an upper window of his boarding house in Berlin where he lived in poverty.
