Golombek Harry (10.03.1911 – 09.01.1995)
English International Master (1950), author, columnist and International Arbiter (1954). Honorary Grandmaster (1985). Golombek was awarded the O.B.E. in the Queen’s Birthday list in 1966.
The correspondent of the Times of London from 1945 till 1989. He was editor of British Chess Magazine from 1938 to 1940. British Champion in 1947, 1949 and 1955.
The arbiter at the 1963 World Chess Championship match between Mikhail Botvinnik and Tigran Petrosian.
A participant in nine Olympiads from 1935 until 1962.
Best results: winner at Leeuwarden in 1947, Baarn in 1948 and Paignton in 1950.
During WWII, Golombek worked at the Hut 8, the section responsible for solving German Naval Enigma.
