NEW YORK STATE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

The New York State Championship is the longest running annual tournament in the US, and possibly the world, having started in 1878 and been held almost every year since then. Joel Benjamin won ten times between 1985 and 2010. The champion is not necessarily the winner of the tournament but the first player who is a state resident. In 2010, the New York State Champion was Aleksandr Ostrovskiy who finished third.
