Capital of the Philippines. Since 1973, under the leadership of Florencio Campomanes and the sponsorship of Marlboro, strong Asian international tournaments were organised. In 1974, Manila hosted the World Junior Championship, in 1976 the Interzonal, in 1987 the World Junior Championship, in 1989 the Asian Team Championship, in 1990 the Interzonal, in 1991 the Women’s World Championship Final Xie Jun vs. Maya Chiburdanidze, in 1992 the Olympiads, in 2004 the Asian Cities Championship, in 2007, 2009 and 2010 the Asian Individual Championships, in 2010 the Florencio Campomanes Memorial, in 2011 the Asian Youth Championships and Zone 3.3 Zonal for Men and Women. In 1975 the city of Manila bid US $5,000,000 for a possible match between Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov, but the match was rejected by the American.
