LONE PINE
A small city in California where between 1971 and 1981, a strong Swiss Open was financed by Louis Statham (died in 1983) and ran by Isaac Kashdan. A great success and participation with more than 25 IGMs and $1,000 to $15,000 given as first prize (a huge sum at the time). The winners were: 1971 Larry Evans, 1972 Svetozar Gligoric, 1973 Arthur Bisguier, 1974 Walter Browne, 1975 Vladimir Liberzon, 1976 Tigran Petrosian, 1977 Nona Gaprindashvili tied with Yuri Balashov, Dragustin Sahovic and Oscar Panno, 1978, Bent Larsen, 1979 Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Florin Gheorgiu and Vladimir Liberzon, 1980 Roman Dzindzidashvili and 1981 Viktor Korchnoi.
