Van-Der-Wiel-John-T.-H.Dutch Grandmaster (1982). European Junior Champion in 1979 and in 1986, Champion of the Netherlands. He took part in several Interzonal Tournaments: in 1982 took eleventh-twelfth, in Biel 1985, fourth-sixth, but missed the Candidates’ by losing the tie-break match to Short. Best results in international tournaments: Sochi 1980, 4th-5th; Wijk aan Zee II 1981, 1st; Wijk aan Zee 1982, 3rd-4th; Novi Sad and Marbella Zonal 1982, Arhus and Ostende 1983, 1st; Sarajevo 1984, 3rd-4th; Montpellier Zonal 1985, 1st; Reykjavik 1985, 4th; Brussels 1985, 3rd; Amsterdam 1986, 2nd; San Bernardino 1986, 1st; Wijk aan Zee 1986, 2nd; Saint Bernardino 1986, 1st; Lugano 1987, 2nd-5th; Ter Apel 1987, 1st-3rd; Amsterdam 1987 (OHRA), 1st; Haninge 1989, 2nd; Banesque 1989, 1st; Elgoibar 1998, 1st; Groningen Albin Theme 2001 and Harmonie Groningen 2004, 1st. In a match, he beat J. Piket in 1986, lost to Tkachiev 3-7 in 1999 and to the computer Rebel 1½-2½ in 2000. Between 1980-90, he participated in nine Olympiads.
