Dutch Grandmaster (1982). European Junior Champion in 1979 and in 1986, Champion of the Netherlands. He took part in several Interzonal Tournaments: in 1982 took eleventh-twelfth, in Biel 1985, fourth-sixth, but missed the Candidates’ by losing the tie-break match to Short. Best results in international tournaments: Sochi 1980, 4^th-5^th; Wijk aan Zee II 1981, 1^st; Wijk aan Zee 1982, 3^rd-4^th; Novi Sad and Marbella Zonal 1982, Arhus and Ostende 1983, 1^st; Sarajevo 1984, 3^rd-4^th; Montpellier Zonal 1985, 1^st; Reykjavik 1985, 4^th; Brussels 1985, 3^rd; Amsterdam 1986, 2^nd; San Bernardino 1986, 1^st; Wijk aan Zee 1986, 2^nd; Saint Bernardino 1986, 1^st; Lugano 1987, 2^nd-5^th; Ter Apel 1987, 1^st-3^rd; Amsterdam 1987 (OHRA), 1^st; Haninge 1989, 2^nd; Banesque 1989, 1^st; Elgoibar 1998, 1^st; Groningen Albin Theme 2001 and Harmonie Groningen 2004, 1^st. In a match, he beat J. Piket in 1986, lost to Tkachiev 3-7 in 1999 and to the computer Rebel 1½-2½ in 2000. Between 1980-90, he participated in nine Olympiads.
