Tarjan James Edward (22.02.1952)
US Grandmaster in 1976. Californian Junior Champion in 1966, in 1970 he was a member of the National Team which won the World Student Team Championship. Finished second place in the US Championship in 1978 and was equal third in 1984. He has participated in all the World Chess Olympiads since 1974 and showed his best result in the Haifa Olympiad, having made 11 points out of 13 at reserve board 2 and received the prize for his best score +8=3 in 1976, being the first reserve, and eleventh place in Riga Interzonal 1979. Won or shared victory in Subotica and Los Angeles 1975, Vancouver 1976, Saratoga 1977, Vrsac 1983. Other best results: Lone Pine 1972, 2nd; Norwich 1972, 2nd; Chicago 1973, 3rd-4th; Novi Sad 1975 2nd, Kito 1976, 2nd; Skopje 1976 4th, Hastings 1976-77, 3rd; Maribor 1978 and Bogota 1979, 2nd; Manchester 1983, 2nd. Tarjan played in the 1984 US Championship, which was his last participation in a chess event. He gave up chess to become a librarian in California Best ELO: 2535 in 1980.
