Georgian Grandmaster (1991). Graduate in economics (1981), chess professional since 1989. Five times Georgian Champion in 1975, 1977, 1981, 1984 et 1985, USSR U18 Champion tied with Garry Kasparov in 1976. Won or shared first at Trnva 1980, Lloyd Bank Master 1990, Biel Open 1991 and 1996, Baden Baden 1993, Yerevan in 1996, Berlin Open 1996, Pula 1997, Linares Open 2001, Dubai Open 2005, Abu Dhabi Open 2008. A participant in six Olympiads since 1992 where he was awarded a silver medal for the best individual performence at board three in the 1998 Olympiad and a silver medal for his best individual performance at board two in the 1992 European Team Championship. Sturua doesn’t play too much since 2010. Best ELO: 2605 in 1999.
